History has it that the ports of Malabar have been great trading centres in spices, silk and other goods as early as the 14 century with the Chinese. Calicut is all poised to start off an Industrial Satellite Township in a 275 acre of land just about 25kms from the city, at the Kinalur Estate, which features a knowledge based industry, medical city, condominiums, entertainment centres andother related infrastructure.

Mavoor, the industrial town of Calicut also sees a possibility of the Birla Group to embark an IT Biotechnology Tourismand Birla Institute of Technology in 400 acres of land.

Globetrotting made easier- Today Calicut airport has all the facilities to handle domestic and international flight services making Calicut airport one of the best in the state.

The most awaited is the costal highway between Ponnani and Elathur. Also the suburban railway line project between Kannur and Tirur will very soon take shape, thus making the accessibility to Calicut smooth from all directions.

The Beypore port is to be developed as one of the major ports and calicut will soon attain a prominent position in both domestic and international trade.

A 68 crore project is in the pipeline undertaken by the K.S.E.B. facilitating an uninterrupted power supply throughout the year. The Japan drinking water scheme is already in progress whereby the entire population of Calicut will be provided with pure and clear drinking water. A waste treatment plant is already sanctioned and a Delhi based company is on the job.

Calicut is one of the educational hubs of Kerala with the IIM, NIT, Medical College, Indian Institute of Spices & Research and CWRDM. The city is now coming up with a number of International Schools, IT Parks and Industrial parks. A 15 crore Hospitality Institute undertaken by the Central Govt. and the National Institute of Mathematics of the Kerala State is being set up at Calicut.

The Corporation of Calicut is also in the process of beautifying the long stretch of beach, coming up with amusements parks, art galleries, constructing flyovers and other such works. The Canoli Canal is being developed in a big way with a dream city / Sarovaram having a Butterfly Park, and the canal cleared and deepened, to be used for boat rides. A long stretch of landscape is designed on either side for people to relax.

Calicut now stands 2 best living place in India in terms of health, education, environment, safety, entertainment and all other common facilities. The next few years will not only make Calicut a 'Shoppers Paradise', a 'Tourist Attraction' but also a "Haven to Live In".
